Based on a novel by Douglas Kennedy. US college lecturer (Ethan Hawke) comes to Paris to win back the trust of his estranged wife and child. Losing all his money, he ends up in a flea pit hotel with a dubious night job, struggling to complete a novel and see his daughter. Then a beautiful, mysterious stranger (Kristin Scott-Thomas) walks into his life. Their passionate and intense relationship triggers a string of inexplicable events — as if an obscure power were taking control of his life.
