This is a brand new print of the classic French anti-war film. Mainly taking place in German prisoner of war camps during WW1, the film examines class, ethnic and national divisions among the prisoners. The two men who escape and the officer who helps, find out, when the ‘enemy’ tries to save them, how class allegiances and the straight-forward warmth of human relationships far outweigh the trumped-up nationalistic posturing of nation states. Probably Renoir’s most humanistic film.
