Voiced by Tilda Swinton, this fascinating documentary, screened to critical acclaim at LFT 2016, explores the extraordinary life of English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy Gertrude Bell. An expert on what was then ‘Mesopotamia’ – the Middle East, she was the only woman wielding any kind of influence on the region in the years following the 1st World War. A young American in Paris works as a personal shopper for a celebrity. She seems to have the ability to communicate with spirits, like that of her recently deceased brother. Soon, she starts to receive ambiguous messages from an unknown source. Kristen Stewart brings an outstanding performance, unforced and unaffected, full of urgency and terror – a Hitchcockian Poltergeist meets Single White Female, in this intriguing, stylish film.

Set in the unpromising world of German business consultancy, here is a low-key triumph: an affecting, weird and thoughtful treat, and possibly the funniest two-and-a-bit hours of German cinema you will ever experience. But there are serious undertones to consider as this tale of a fraught relationship between father and daughter develops. A chance to see the original before the rumoured Hollywood remake is released.
