  1. Whilst there is no shortage of films about the Jewish holocaust itself, this was a poignant look at the guilt, shame and anger felt by those that survived. In particular, the Aunt, Wanda, with her ambiguous life as an acclaimed judge seeking justice against those that destroyed her family (despite her communist masters’ ambivalence to the Holocaust) and her alcoholic, immoral private life.

I liked Pawlikowski’s approach to this film; the black and white photography, TV-style aspect ratio, static cameras all added to the perception that this was Communist Poland in 1962 (even the ‘sex’ scene – just Ida’s head and shoulders – was shot with a sixties coyness). It’s almost a disappointment to discover it was shot with digital cameras not an ancient Arriflex camera!
