  1. I first saw this film in a preview showing at the BFI last spring and was most disappointed with it. However, once the film was released and Pedro Almodóvar was interviewed in the press, I began to get a better understanding of the targets for some of the satire, which I feel is essential to appreciating the film. As it was pointed out in the film notes – Almodóvar himself described the film as his most “local” – what, I wonder, would the Spanish have made of Spitting Image back in the eighties, not knowing any of the British Cabinet. Watching the film for a second time was, for me, a far less painful experience. That said, it is far from his best work.
