Our Next Presentation: I, Daniel Blake

THE CRAMPHORN THEATRE, CHELMSFORD – Tuesday 21st MARCH @ 8PM

-3267Days -15Hours -9Minutes -51Seconds

In a change from our published programme, we present Ken Loach’s multi-award winning I, Daniel Blake. Daniel (59), has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain. (Read more…)

This film will be followed by a discussion meeting, in the Cramphorn Theatre foyer (see below).

Our Next Presentation: Our Little Sister

THE CRAMPHORN THEATRE, CHELMSFORD – Monday 6TH March @ 8PM

-3282Days -15Hours -9Minutes -51Seconds

Hirokazu Koreeda’s previous films, I Wish and Like Father, Like Son, have been well received by CFC members in the past. In his latest work (based on the “Umi-machi Diary” graphic novels), three grown-up, but maybe not-so-grown-up, sisters live together in a house once owned by their grandmother and acquired under painful circumstances. When they attend their father’s funeral they are delighted by his teen-age daughter Suzo, their step-sister, and she is invited to live with them. The narrative accumulates in power as the lives of the sisters unfolds. (Read more…)

Film for Tuesday 21st March

The distributors of our intended screening, “Black Mountain Poets”, ceased trading earlier this year, and we are unable to obtain a license for the screening of this film.  We are currently deciding on a replacement, and an announcement will be made here as soon as possible.

The 21st is also the scheduled date of our second informal discussion evening, to be held in the Foyer of the Cramphorn Theatre, following the screening of the film.  This event may have to be rescheduled, however, depending on the length of the replacement film
