Cyril is a troubled 10-year-old living in care because his father has abandoned him. When he encounters Samantha she offers help and emotional support, and, gradually, the two begin to bond. With its bike motif and a narrative that explores ordinary lives it’s hard not to think of Bicycle Thieves, but the Dardenne brothers’ latest film is a more observational account of character and environment. This is a satisfyingly straightforward story that doesn’t attempt to manipulate the viewer.
