  1. Yes, this was an exceptionally watchable and engaging film. The monochrome worked well – somehow would not have had the same bleak atmosphere and impact if in colour. It was not just Dern’s central role, but also the other characters, right down to the lady behind the counter in the publisher’s office in Lincoln and the staff behind the bar(s), which made it so absorbing. And, with ‘Blue Ruin’, yet another telling look at aspects of American culture.

  2. There was just so much about this film to enjoy: Wonderfully observed performances from all the cast (I enjoyed the portrayal of the two dead-beat cousins ridiculing the driving skills of the two brothers); the vacuous conversations from a family who have not seen each other in years but have nothing in common; Will Forte finding out more about his mother (an excellent performance from June Squibb) than he could ever have wanted to know.
As several have observed in the audience feedback, the black and white photography and Mark Orton’s excellent soundtrack added to the bleakness of the fading American Dream following the Financial crisis. Interesting to learn from Mark’s Film notes that a colour (or should that be color) print has been shown on US Television
