Our Next Presentation: I Am Not Your Negro

THE CRAMPHORN THEATRE, CHELMSFORD – Monday 4th December @ 8PM

-3009Days -15Hours -33Minutes 00Seconds

Unfortunately, due to difficulties with the foreign distributor, we have been unable to obtain a licence to screen Starless Dreams this Monday.  Our apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to seeing this documentary.

However, the good news is that at very short notice we have been able obtain an excellent alternative film from our ‘reserve’ list.  This is “I am not your Negro” which was nominated for best documentary at the 2017 Oscars.  A brief synopsis from IMDB:

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House.” The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished.

The film is narrated by Samuel L Jackson and contains archive footage featuring Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, Gary Cooper, Doris Day, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Tony Curtis, Charlton Heston, Audrey Hepburn, Joan Crawford and many others.  (Read more…)

Adam King Short Films

As an extra treat, we are fortunate in being given the opportunity to start the evening by showing two short films from Essex based indie filmmaker Adam King.  Adam will be on hand to introduce the films himself.

They are called “At a Distance” and “Augmented Reality”.

Each film is about 3 minutes long so they will not make the evening overlong as the runtime of our main film is only slightly over 1½ Hours.

Our Next Presentation: Starless Dreams

THE CRAMPHORN THEATRE, CHELMSFORD – Monday 4th December @ 8PM

-3009Days -15Hours -33Minutes -1Seconds

This documentary focuses on the lives of girls in a juvenile delinquency centre in Iran. Although they are being punished for a variety of ‘crimes’, most have drug addicts in their families, have been mentally and physically abused and are really only guilty of being born in the wrong place. There are moments of joy, however, for them to savour and they are unflinchingly direct and open in their responses to the director’s questions.  (Read more…)

Adam King Short Films

As “Starless Dreams” is only 76 minutes long, Chelmsford Film Club are taking the opportunity to show 2 films by a young local film maker, Adam King.  Both films are only 2-3 minutes long and we hope Adam will be here to introduce both films. Though short, both films are very imaginative and we hope you will enjoy!

A smash hit in Sweden last year and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this is an irresistible adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s bestselling novel. When a new, young family moves in next door a story of great humanity, tenderness and, above all, humour develops: look for the long-running car joke!  (Read more…)
