I saw The Green Ray last year when it was shown at the Cramphorn and loved it. Some of the reasons are personal; my daughter lived and worked in Paris in the late 80s when the film was made, and further back in time when I was a kid my dad used to get my sister and me to gaze at sunsets when we were on holiday in Cornwall or Wales, in order to see the magical green flash. Now I’ve seen it at last!
I loved the Englishman in the film solemnly explaining the science behind the phenomenon, and best of all Delphine’s taxi-driver dad’s speech about never needing to go on holiday because all you need is right there in Paris. It was a pleasure to see all the contrasting French holiday destinations as well as Paris itself . The dialogue, improvised throughout, was so naturalistic that I was transported back to staying with French families over the years. Delphine’s bossy friend was spot on.
Marie Riviere as Delphine perfectly conveyed that feeling of insecurity and inability to make decisions that I recognise from my young female adulthood. After the film had ended last year, the lady behind me remarked that she thought that the final bloke wasn’t suited to Delphine at all. I disagree. There he was, a reliable bloke through and through, a carpenter, a practical man straight out of the bible. My dad would have loved him.

Came out after an hour, first time ever left a film!!!! Life’s too short and better things to do with Tuesday evening. Paint drying seemed more interesting.
