Sometimes, at the end of a season, you realise there has been a common theme running through several of the films that wasn't, necessarily, obvious when the season was planned.
This year, three of the films dealt with aspects of life within (outwardly idyllic) middle-class/bourgeois lifestyles:
- Thérèse Desqueyroux's criminal attempt to destroy everything by poisoning her husband;
- In Exhibition, childless couple, D and H - having built an artists' paradise - finding themselves in an existence devoid of excitement.
- And finally, in The Great Beauty, Jeb - the life and soul of the party and the man everyone wants to emulate - looking back on his 65th birthday and finding a shallow existence, is left ruing a life of lost love and missed opportunities.
