can never write on the night - need time to let film and thoughts about it percolate. thought it was long but very good - a slow moving window into every day life in modern Japan, which I had not idea is so incredibly built up. three generations all looking for happiness - in nostalgia about the past (the childhood memory of cake that can't be recreated), movement and dance, becoming an Indie star, and the children's desire to be reunite their family. Insightful and empathetic portrayal of the children and their dreams. lovely to see how much freedom the children have, not obsessed by "stranger danger" but able to strike out and take off for a few days and live on their wits and deception and saved up money they've gleaned from selling their possessions. liked the conspiracy with the grandfather and the ultimate acceptance and joy in the present in their current lives, in town, or growing vegetables and new found friends. it was a window into another culture and perhaps if taking place here, would not have had the magical charm

On reflection, if this film was based somewhere in the UK then I wouldn't have been so entertained. However, because of the cultural experience for me this film was a delight, great acting from the children especially. Some comments have related this film to a home movie, I actually think that is a compliment - it felt realistic. It did lose a little momentum towards the end.
