Of all the films shown by CFC since we started canvassing feedback from the audience, this was the most evenly matched. Excepting that only one person thought it ‘Poor’, opinion was more-or-less evenly divided across the other categories.

As many have said, whilst beautifully filmed it was difficult to become emotionally involved – partly because the film sticks closely to the original novel (except the novel begins with Thérèse being found not guilty and is more about the Desqueyroux Family’s treatment of her, and her depression, with her early life, marriage and crime being told in flashback).

Beautifully filmed but a failed cerebral affectation. Arty for the sake of it. ‘Chocolate’ managed to depict the stifling and racist period in France as effectively and in a more entertaining way. Therese , whilst showing some spirit , adopted a foolish Ill-conceived attempt to end her boredom. It was never going to deliver her from that life even if she had been successful. It would have been better to have had an odd week in Paris apparently ‘shopping’ and maintain the pretence at home. All would have been satisfied and the local mores maintained.
