the absence of subtitles for the somali pirates mirrored what situtation would have been like for victims – tense, meaningless shouting, no dialogue, trigger happy fingers on guns, brutality both psychological and physical and the increasing frustration of both sides on board, pawns in the negoiating procss.
, though by end of 4 months, apart from the post fishing drinking celebration, we see little of the dynamics of the relations created between hostages and captors.
captains death tragically reminded of how fragile the peace between them is and the senselessness of the whole thing.
the cold amoral negtioations with no concern for life were chilling.
read film notes after and found it illuminating to hear that some of crew were there, ship and board room actors isolated and only working on radio contact and improvisation. real life negoitiator responding to situation without script. all made it very realistic.

Whilst it would have been interesting to have a Somalian viewpoint to perhaps mitigate the reasons behind their piracy, not providing subtitles for the Pirates increased the realism of the hostages situation.
