Not the same experience as large screen but thought it was very good indeed. stark portrayal of harsh ascetic life style and brutal persecution. scenery and shots were beautiful and found the lack of music but bird song, wind, etc. enhanced the atmosphere. ending was thought provoking. She’s come to love her work and perhaps the other doctor and find fulfillment there. She saves the girl’s life, though one wonders what kind of a reception the unexpected pregnant child will get from the expectant boyfriend. the choice is between a useful satisfying life as a doctor in the “back water” that has been neglected or being a plaything of the boyfriend who didn’t want her to continue working as a doctor. I know what I’d choose. great film choice. deep, moving, atmospheric and an education in east german culture. thank you

However, on reflection, Barbara had shown great empathy towards her patients – especially the much-abused Stella – and that, coupled with her growing attraction towards André, yes I could see her relinquish her one chance of freedom to help someone whose needs were greater.

In the feedback comments, someone commented (favourably) about the lack of a soundtrack – whilst this is true of a musical soundtrack, the background effects (the exaggerated wind through the trees, birds, the crickets chirruping whilst waiting on the beach, and the anaemic engines of the Trabants) certainly added to the bleakness of life within the DDR.
