In this masterpiece of a film, Golshifteh Farahani plays an Afghan woman. That is to say, she is nothing—her husband’s shadow. He has recently become a paraplegic following an honour-related dispute, paralyzed from the neck down, lying on the floor, unmoving, unseeing, unhearing. Looking after him becomes his wife’s main task and duty while also providing for her two little girls amidst stark poverty: no food, no water, no electricity and, of course, no money. But when events take an unexpected course even she can smile.
