We begin with a brief prologue on the ground beside the emblematically named Peninsula Airways’ airbus. Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas make cameo appearances as a pregnant wife and her uxorious husband, working respectively as a baggage truck driver and chocks inspector. They’re involved in a minor accident beside the shiny, pristine plane before cheerfully leaving another ground staff member to clear up. The great Almodovar combines subtlety and frivolity in a Wildean manner to comment upon Spain’s current moral and economic crisis.

  1. I didn’t leave a slip for this film but I would have marked it as ‘poor’. I thought it was silly, faintly unpleasant and completely lacking in humour. Rubbish in other words. John Denniss
