Mr. Lazarescu, a 63 year old lonely man feels sick and calls the ambulance. When it arrives the paramedic decides she should take him to the hospital but once there they decide to send him to another hospital and then yet another... As the night unfolds and they can't find a hospital for Mr. Lazarescu, his health starts to deteriorate fast. This seemingly bleak portrait of an old man becoming ill and a system which seems unable or unwilling to care for him, is in fact an incredibly moving film, that raises profound issues about humanity, both within society and as individuals. As we follow him and the paramedic trying to get a hospital to admit him during this painful night, issues such as dignity and compassion are subtly explored, leaving us to consider how we treat each other and how we expect to be treated. |
