An erotic, tender, complex and disturbing depiction of the relationship between two women. Cynthia and Evelyn live together in a grand old house in the middle of a moss-draped forest: a fairy-tale realm. Appearing to be mistress and maid, Evelyn’s duties clearly extend far beyond doing the housework, while who is dominant, who subservient becomes problematic. With many allusions and references to other films and directors, and much humour, there is no violence, no men – well, hardly any – but many butterflies. Hence the title of this critically acclaimed work.
