Ronald Reagan once said: “There is nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.” In this hugely enjoyable and bracing tale, the insides of humans interact with the outsides of horses and horse and humans meet on equal terms. Almost everything happens in the great Icelandic outdoors: a wildly beautiful plain, effectively one single location, the human inhabitants of which, smallholders and horse breeders, take a certain curtain-twitching interest in each other’s business, binoculars at the ready.

One of the pleasures of this film is the extent to which the horses really do feel like part of the narrative.

  1. Great use of that gritty Icelandic canvas to show us who the real animals really are. Entertaining with some laugh out loud moments although has depressing undertones.
